Having mobile data in Thailand is not optional — you need it for Grab, Google Maps, LINE (Thailand’s default messaging app), and staying in touch. The good news is that Thai SIM cards are cheap, fast, and easy to get. This guide covers every option from airport SIM cards to eSIMs you can activate before you land.

The Three Thai Providers

Thailand has three major mobile networks:

AIS — the largest network with the best overall coverage, including rural areas and islands. Generally considered the most reliable choice for visitors traveling outside Bangkok and Pattaya.

TrueMove H — strong coverage in urban areas and increasingly competitive with AIS. True and DTAC merged in 2023, but still operate separate brands and networks.

DTAC — now part of the True Corporation group. DTAC’s Happy Tourist SIM was long the default recommendation for visitors. Coverage is solid in cities but slightly weaker in remote areas compared to AIS.

For Pattaya specifically, all three networks work well. You will have fast 4G/5G coverage across the city, on Koh Larn, and along the entire coast. The differences between providers only matter if you plan to travel to remote islands or national parks.

Tourist SIM Cards — Buy at the Airport

The easiest option for most visitors. All major Thai airports have SIM card counters from AIS, TrueMove, and DTAC in the arrivals hall, staffed by English-speaking representatives who will install the card and test it before you leave.

What you need: Your passport. Thai law requires all SIM cards to be registered with identification.

AIS Tourist Packages

TravellerUnlimitedUnlimited (AIS network)15 days599 THB
TravellerUnlimitedUnlimited (all networks)30 days899 THB
PremiumUnlimited 5GUnlimited + intl. credit30 days1,599 THB

AIS offers the widest range of packages and the best nationwide coverage. Their unlimited plans throttle to lower speeds after a daily fair-use amount, but for normal browsing, maps, and social media this is rarely noticeable.

TrueMove H Tourist Packages

TouristUnlimited 5GUnlimited + intl. credit8 days449 THB
TouristUnlimited 5GUnlimited + intl. credit15 days599 THB
TouristUnlimited 5GUnlimited + intl. credit30 days1,199 THB

TrueMove includes free WiFi access at True hotspots and international calling credit in all tourist plans. Good choice if you need to make international calls.

DTAC Happy Tourist SIM

DTAC includes free minutes to several Asian countries (China, Hong Kong, South Korea, India, and others), making it interesting if you travel the region. No international call credit to Western countries though.

Our Pick

AIS is what we use and recommend. Best coverage, most flexible packages, and the most reliable network for Pattaya and the surrounding area. The 15-day unlimited plan at 599 THB hits the sweet spot for most visitors.

Buying a SIM Outside the Airport

If you did not grab a SIM at the airport, you have plenty of options in Pattaya:

7-Eleven — Most branches sell prepaid SIM cards. The staff can help with activation, though English skills vary. Bring your passport.

Provider shops — AIS, True, and DTAC all have branded shops in Terminal 21, Central Festival, and along major roads in Pattaya. These are the best option if you need help choosing a plan or have technical issues.

Street vendors — Some tourist areas have small phone shops selling SIM cards. Prices and legitimacy vary. Stick to official shops or 7-Eleven.

eSIM — Activate Before You Land

If your phone supports eSIM (most iPhones since XR, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models), you can buy a Thailand data plan online and activate it before your flight. No physical card, no airport queue, no passport registration hassle.

Airalo

The budget-friendly option with flexible plans.

  • 1 GB / 7 days: $4.50
  • 10 GB / 30 days: $15
  • 20 GB / 30 days: $24
  • Unlimited / 15 days: $19.95 (includes calls and SMS)

Airalo uses the TrueMove/DTAC network in Thailand. Good city coverage, works well in Pattaya. Best value if you know roughly how much data you will use.

Holafly

The “don’t think about it” option with unlimited data.

  • 1 day: $3.90
  • 5 days: $19.50
  • 10 days: $36.90
  • 20 days: $62
  • 30 days: $69

Holafly offers truly unlimited data with no GB caps, but hotspot sharing is limited to 500 MB per day. They may throttle speeds after heavy usage under their fair-use policy. Good for heavy users who stream video or work remotely.

eSIM vs. Local SIM — Which to Choose?

Local SIMeSIM

SetupNeed passport, 10 min at airportBuy online, instant activation
Thai phone numberYesUsually no
CallsIncludedData only (mostly)

Best forLonger stays, need Thai numberShort trips, convenience

Get a local SIM if: You stay more than a week, want a Thai phone number (needed for LINE, Grab registration, food delivery apps), or plan to return to Thailand regularly.

Get an eSIM if: You are visiting for a few days, hate airport queues, or want data working the moment you land.

Keeping Your Thai Number Long-Term

If you visit Thailand regularly, keeping a Thai SIM card active between trips is easy and costs almost nothing.

The rule is simple: Every top-up extends your SIM validity by 30 days. The minimum top-up is just 10 THB — enough to keep the card alive for another month. As long as you top up at least once within the validity period, your number stays active.

Maximum validity is 12 months. If your SIM goes 12 months without any activity (no top-up, no call, no data usage), the number is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Your remaining credit is also lost.

How to top up from abroad: Use the provider’s app (myAIS, True iService, or DTAC app) with an international credit card, or use services like MobileTopup.com to send credit remotely. This means you can keep your Thai number alive from anywhere in the world for roughly 120 THB per year (10 THB per month).

Why bother? Having a consistent Thai phone number means your Grab account, LINE contacts, food delivery apps, and banking registrations all stay intact between trips. It also means you arrive with a working phone number rather than starting fresh every time.

We use AIS and top up every few months to keep the number active. After years of visits, having the same Thai number makes everything smoother — Grab drivers can call you, restaurants can confirm reservations, and your LINE contacts stay connected.

Data Speed and Coverage in Pattaya

Pattaya has excellent mobile coverage. All three networks deliver fast 4G/LTE throughout the city, and 5G is available in central areas and malls. Typical speeds:

  • 4G in Pattaya: 20 to 80 Mbps download, more than enough for video calls and streaming
  • 5G in Pattaya: 100 to 300 Mbps where available (Terminal 21, Central Festival, Beach Road area)
  • Koh Larn: 4G coverage from all networks, though speeds are lower than the mainland
  • Rural areas east of Sukhumvit: Coverage thins out in some spots, AIS is the most reliable here

Quick Tips

  • Unlock your phone before traveling. Carrier-locked phones from some countries will not accept Thai SIM cards. Check with your provider before departure or use eSIM.
  • Dual SIM phones let you keep your home number active for receiving SMS (bank verification codes, etc.) while using a Thai SIM for data. Most modern phones support this.
  • Download offline maps in Google Maps for the Pattaya area before your trip, as a backup in case you have any connectivity gaps.
  • WiFi is everywhere in Pattaya — hotels, restaurants, malls, and even most bars offer free WiFi. But having mobile data for Grab and navigation while walking or riding is essential.
  • LINE is Thailand’s WhatsApp. Everyone uses it — hotels, restaurants, tour operators, even government services. Register with your Thai number to get the full experience.
